Autumn in Cumbria sees the county undergo a beautiful change in scenery. The sweeping valleys turn to shades of orange, yellow and gold as autumn begins to take hold of the countryside, making for some truly spectacular views.
The outdoors is still a welcoming playground, perfect for long walks in the mountains or even a dip in the lake, where the waters cling to the last of summer’s warmth.
Autumn is foraging season and the best of local produce is on show, with festivals celebrating the harvest and plenty more besides. Agricultural shows are a big feature of the calendar, including traditional ones that have been running for centuries: this is the perfect opportunity to explore the Cumbrian larder in all its goodness.
You can witness (or try your hand at) some traditional sport: the Egremont Crab Fair hosts wrestling and a world-famous gurning competition, which rewards the person who can pull the ugliest face through a horse collar! There are beer and walking festivals, music weekends and even a celebration of chillis.
