About

ARRAGONS CYCLE HIRE

Arragons Cycle Hire has been established since 2018, offering a wide variety of bicycles available to hire for the visitors of Lowther Castle. From trail bikes (Scott Aspect) for adult riders, superlight mountain bikes (Saracen Mantra) for Junior riders to a selection of pedal assist electric bikes (Scott Aspect with Bosch Performance CX motor) ideal for anyone who cannot face the more uphill stretches of the Lake District. Our electric bikes are equipped with industry leading motors which are capable of covering in excess of 50 miles in one charge, so even if you're out of practice, you will be ahead of the pack!

At Lowther Castle there is a network of dedicated cycle and walking trails that weave amongst the beautiful landscape of the surrounding Lowther Estate, leading to Askham Fell with the most picturesque views of the Lake District.

Please note that after hiring bikes and exploring the trails, you can enjoy 10% off admission to the Castle & Gardens (including the adventure playground) on production of your bike-hire receipt.

LOWTHER ESTATE TRAILS

The trails that run through the Lowther Estate embrace all that is beautiful in the lovely Lowther valley. Cycle-paths snake through the ancient woodland and pastures of Lowther Park, following the stunning contours of the landscape. All trails within the Lowther Estate have been created for full family enjoyment and are graded in accordance with national cycling standards. There are signposts at every junction, with destinations and length in miles clearly shown. In addition to this, there are some signposted circular routes that go beyond the estate boundaries. Hirers can also create their own rides beyond Lowther and into the Eden Valley or Lake District.

For more information on the trails, visit https://arragonshirelowther.com/pages/lowther-castle

LOWTHER CASTLE

Of the many treasures waiting to be discovered in the English Lake District, Lowther Castle is a gem. Built at the turn of the 19th century, on the site of two previous houses, the castle was a grand affair boasting a room for every day of the year. Its gardens were the envy of the north. But in 1957 the castle was demolished. Just the façade and outer walls remained standing and for over half a century, the place was empty – home only to chickens, pigs and the odd bat. The gardens were lost to wilderness.

Seventy years on from its demolition, Lowther Castle is now one of the most intriguing visitor attractions in the country. Dramatic ruins, gardens within gardens, an adventure playground to rival the best in the land. For visitors young and old (and four-legged), Lowther Castle offers plenty to enjoy. And when all of you are ready for a rest, you can retreat to the café and have some delicious food, before taking to the gift shop and indulging in one last treat.

Lowther Castle & Gardens are open every day from 10am to 4pm in winter and 10am to 5pm in summer. For castle and garden entry fees, click here. Last entry to the gardens 1 hour before closing. Shop, café, courtyard and parking are free to use.
