Peter rabbit is one of the most famous characters created by author and conservationist Beatrix Potter. Beatrix Potter's love of the Lake District came from an early age, when she and her family holidayed in the area and stayed at Wray Castle, overlooking Windermere. Her lifelong love of the countryside and the Lake District started here. She later settled in the area, at her Lake District home, Hill Top, which also featured in many of her stories, including those of Peter Rabbit and friends.
