Jancis Robinson OBE is an esteemed wine critic. She writes a weekly column for the Financial Times and several other publications alongside a daily column on her website.
Jancis was born and raised in Carlisle. She left to study at Oxford and after a brief stint in the travel industry, started writing about her favourite tipple when she became deputy of editor of Wine and Spirit Magazine.
She became a ‘Master of Wine’ a prestigious recognition of one’s knowledge of wine. Jancis was the first person outside of the wine industry to do so. She used her credentials to advise British Airways on their wine collection including the selection available onboard Concorde.
Her prestigious credentials don’t end there. Robinson is an advisor to the official royal wine cellar.
Robinson is considered to be one of the most trusted wine experts in the world. She has written several books on the subject.
She also imparted her knowledge on television with a ten part wine course which was broadcast on BBC 2. This was also turned into a novel, a DVD box set and is also now an online course.
Her broadcasting skills also include presenting the wine programme ‘Uncorked’ on BBC Radio Four.
Jancis has won numerous awards throughout her career including being named Decanter magazine Woman of the year in 1999 alongside prestigious accolades throughout Europe.
Jancis recently launched a wine club on her website enabling connoisseurs to compare notes and tips on the finest wines and the current tasting trends.
Robinson has a distinct style with her wine critiques. She gives wine ratings based on both how the wine was showing at the time of tasting and its potential to improve with age. She rates the bottles on a 20 point scale.
Jancis was made an OBE in 2003.
