Located at the tranquil southern end of Lake Windermere, Lakeside Pier offers a different pace of exploration in the Lake District. Board a Windermere Lake Cruise’s vessel and get treated to the finest views from the water.
The iconic Yellow Cruise connects Lakeside Pier with the bustling village of Bowness-on-Windermere. Enjoy the leisurely round trip and soak in the stunning landscapes, dotted with islands and framed by rolling hills. More adventurous visitors can hop on and hop off with the Freedom of the Lake ticket, spending a full day cruising and exploring the various lakeshore attractions. The Yellow Cruise operates all year round but is weekends only in January.
In summer months, nature enthusiasts will love exploring Fell Foot Park, a short ferry ride from Lakeside. Wander through woodlands, discover a delightful adventure playground, and enjoy a picnic with a view. The frequent Fell Foot Ferry does the short hop between each pier but saves a 3-mile journey by road. For visitors wanting to explore more, Fell Foot Ferry also provides a 30-minute mini-cruise with a fascinating commentary on the sights and sounds of southern Lake Windermere.
Right on Lakeside Pier's doorstep is a cluster of family-friendly destinations. Immerse yourself in the underwater world at the Lakes Aquarium (open all year), home to fascinating creatures from both local waters and further afield. Next door, the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway (open during the summer months) offers a nostalgic steam train journey through the picturesque Leven Valley.
Lakeside and the local area are a great destination for walkers with part of the West Windermere Way to Newby Bridge starting here. For a more strenuous hike head to Great Knott Wood (10 mins walk) and explore the many paths around this ancient woodland.
Lakeside Pier is a destination for those seeking both serene cruising and a range of diverse attractions. From the gentle sway of the boats to the excitement of steam engines and playful otters, there's an experience for every age and interest. Lakeside makes a fabulous starting point for exploring the southern reaches of captivating Lake Windermere.
