About

At first glance, Sella Park gives the appearance of a 17th Century house with 19th Century additions. Closer examination however reveals earlier features such as the individual pane window embrasures of the 15th Century and the remains of a 14th Century type window recess and seat.
Indeed, it is possible that the original building at Sella Park Ford was one of the substantial thick walled Pele towers common to the Border District and some scholars suggest that in the 13th Century Sella Park was the sea grange of the monks of Calder Abbey.

New for Autumn 2024 the completion of 10 brand-new luxury bedrooms, situated within the historic hotel’s beautifully restored traditional barn. These additional rooms enable Sella Park to host more guests and further showcases its unique position as a premier destination in the Westen Lake District.

Calder Abbey was founded in 1134 on land granted by the Earl of Chester who had been granted the whole of Cumberland by William the Conqueror.

The estate was acquired by Sir Henry Curwen of Workington in the joint names of himself and his son Thomas. Thomas was succeeded by his son D’Arcy in 1653 who made extensive additions to the house, including; a dining hall with a great chamber above, a spacious shallow stepped staircase and bedrooms to accommodate his 17 children.

In 1795, following over 200 years of Curwen ownership, George Edward Stanley of Ponsonby Hall, just across the River Calder, agreed to buy the estate for £2,100 and then in 1810 purchased the freehold for £635.10s.6d. During the 143 years of Stanley ownership, the property was leased out to a succession of tenants including several clergymen, a magistrate, a late captain of the 4th regiment of Foot and a mine owner and JP
The Stanley’s sold the house to James McGowan in 1938 and in 1954 Sella Park, together with six acres of land was bought for use as a private hotel.

Sella Park is now part of the Pennington Hotels group and the management and team are extremely proud of their refurbished property, with beautiful lounge bar, Priory restaurant and relaxing bedrooms. All areas have been respectfully updated giving a modern, light & airy feel to this beautiful hotel. We have 7 acres of wonderful garden areas with paths to the River Calder, outdoor seating to enjoy the warmer months with al fresco dining available too.

Sella Park offers magical weddings and tailored corporate and general celebratory events, where the experienced team led by our General Manager, John strive to make every event individual and special. Our Kitchen at Sella Park is led by our Head Chef Ian who loves to showcase local produce and offer a wonderful dining experience for all our guests.
