As part of Cumbria Tourism’s 50th anniversary, the team are trying out 50 different tourism experiences throughout the year – to help inspire your own days out across the Lake District, Cumbria. Gavin and Alison visited The Patterdale Estate to tour their accommodation and learn more about the work done there by YMCA North Tyneside.

Having lived in the Lake District for over 8 years I feel that I have seen so many amazing places around our special county. I always feel grateful to live in such a beautiful place and being able to visit locations many people who are holiday don’t get chance to.  

 

Recently my colleague Alison and I visited The Patterdale Estate for the first time. The Patterdale Estate is a wonderful holiday destination hidden on the banks of Ullswater, which consists of various types of accommodation from lodges, bothies and touring pitches all set in a well maintained and quiet location. The site is peaceful and has so many wonderful walks to explore as well as access to Ullswater itself. Cat Morton, Hospitality Manager at The Patterdale Estate, (and her trusty dog Gary!) was our guide and took us on a wonderful walk around the grounds of the estate. We walked along a picture-perfect stream which after a short distance led us to a tarn which still has access to an old Icehouse. We were lucky enough to be able to access the Icehouse, which I can assure you still felt like it had ice in it … very chilly!

 

The Estate is a wonderful destination for a holiday in the Lakes - not only for its sheer beauty, but also when you book a holiday through The Patterdale Estate, you help to give back to others as well.  It's run by YMCA North Tyneside, and the work they do supports:

• Providing homes for homeless young people
• Street based youth work to help tackle anti-social behaviour
• Supporting young people with mental health disorders
• Providing training and education for young people
• Campaigning on things that matter to young people
• Addressing the needs of those young people most in need

There are also volunteering opportunities available if you are looking to lend a hand in their work with conservation and habitat regeneration to support local plants and wildlife.
