Grasmere Gingerbread® opened its second shop in this attractive Grade II listed ‘Corner Shop’ building in Hawkshead, in June 2023. Regular visitors to this charming unspoilt village may recall that it formerly housed The National Trust. Aching with historical ambience, its smooth slate floor, bulging walls and original windows evoke bygone times. First converted into retail premises in 1870, the shop sells Grasmere Gingerbread®, freshly brewed takeaway artisan coffee roasted by Duffins of Staveley, hot ginger wine, Grasmere Gingerbread® Ice Cream and a selection of ginger-flavoured foodstuffs and ginger-themed crafts and souvenirs made by small family businesses in Cumbria.
Friendly staff dress in traditional Victorian costume and have garnered positive reviews on various social media sites for their attentive demeanours and exceptional customer care. There is plenty of room and time to browse at your leisure and translation sheets are available for foreign visitors with limited English.
The shop is popular with cyclists and walkers who stock up on Grasmere Gingerbread® before they head off for the day. Nearby visitor attractions include Hill Top at Near Sawrey, the former home of children’s author Beatrix Potter, and Brantwood overlooking Coniston, the former home of artist John Ruskin. The Old Man of Coniston is a popular mountain hike and the Steam Yacht Gondola cruises the waters of Coniston in the summer months.
