You are here: Home > Things to Do > Smardale Gill Nature Reserve
Smardale is a gem of a nature reserve away from the hustle and bustle of the Lake District. From the car park climb the accessible ramp up to the entrance gate where you’ll find an all-accessible track that runs along the old railway line all the way to Smardale viaduct (1.5 miles) and enjoy the spectacular views.
If you’re looking for a longer walk then continue past the viaduct along the more uneven path to Newbiggin on Lune. From the car park a path can be taken in the opposite direction to Waitby Greenriggs where orchids can be seen from Spring and through summer.
The wildlife habitats at Smardale Nature Reserve are a mix of ancient woodland and limestone grassland. Unusual plants to look out for include bloody cranesbill, fragrant and butterfly orchid. Smardale is one of the only two sites in England that’s home to the Scotch argus butterfly, which can be spotted in summer. Red squirrels live in the woodlands and can be see climbing in the trees.
Dogs on leads are welcome. Native cattle graze here.

Member of Cumbria Tourism 2016To Smardale car park: from the A685 between Ravenstonedale and Kirkby Stephen, take the Smardale turning. Cross over the railway and turn left at the T-junction. Bear right over the disused railway and turn immediately right. The car park is 200m on your right.
