You are here: Home > Things to Do > The Mountains - Survival Training in a Mountainous Environment with Green Man Survival
The mountains are one of the UK’s harshest environments. Spend an action packed training day with an experienced and qualified instructor to learn the essential skills needed to successfully survive and thrive in this remote and hazardous habitat
Leaving the car park in the morning we head up the scenic Mickleden valley following the pretty beck, an ideal warm up for the legs. Along the way we have sight of iconic Lake District fells such as Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and the Langdale Pikes. We will ascend via Stake Gill to the high pass which affords a spectacular vista of the surrounding Lakeland peaks and valleys. Traversing the high summits, bagging the summits of the Langdale Pikes along the way, we have the opportunity to put our training into practice as we complete our day's adventure.
We aim to cover the following learning points through the day:
* Navigation by 1:25k scale map and basic compass work
* Reading the terrain and moving over rough ground
* River crossings
* Emergency procedures
* Emergency overnight shelter
* Water sourcing and purification
* Signalling
* Contents of the mountain day pack
* Foraging, tree ID
The day will be spent moving through challenging mountainous terrain and learning mountain navigation and survival skills while on the move and in the real environment.
All teaching equipment will be provided outside of your typical day pack.
This is suitable for beginner and more experienced hillwalkers alike, however participants should have a good level of general fitness and be prepared to move over rough ground, with the occasional use of hands and feet to navigate steeper sections. We will cover a distance of approximately 15km over mountainous terrain. The route taken on the day may be adapted depending on the conditions and pace of the group.
