About

Self Catering Lake District Bothy, sleeps 4 people and set in an amazing landscape with no light pollution.  Perfect for those wishing to experience a short break under Dark Skies and when conditions allow, a stunning Star Gazing experience.

This is back to basics, no frills, no fuss accommodation, yet has everything you will need. This is camping without canvas.

The Bothy has an inviting log burning stove set in the centre of the single room accommodation, as we have no mains electricity light is mainly by candle light which just enhances the ambiance of the building.  We do have a small solar panel which when weather permits provides enough power to charge a mobile phone or i-pad if needed and some interior lighting.  Water is sourced by our water butts and cooking is by our Gaz camping stoves, which are also used to heat water for washing.  Seating is a rustic ratten cane sofa and chairs and the dining area has a large wooden kitchen table with bench seats.  There is a Sealy double blow up mattress and a single mattress, but  please bring your own sleeping bags no bedding is provided.  In a separate building next to the Bothy is a wood store and compost toilet.  In our nearby barn/shed there is a hot water shower which could be made available by arrangement.

It is the out of the way location and the solitude that make our Bothy a place to relax and unwind and get away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life and move us back to a simpler way of living.

Parking is on our land but a few minutes walk away from the Bothy, so if required we can move some of your belongings for you with our Quad bike and trailer.

The Bothy is set in 160 acres of our land which you be free to roam, dogs must be on a lead at all times.  There is a stream on the edge of our land and a newly developed pond.  Sheep do graze  on the land.  At dusk, you could quite easily see a Heron, Owl, Deer or even Fox. We have Skylark,Curlew and Cuckoo ground nesting in our fields. There are Buzzards nesting in the neighbouring wood. It is a magical place, surrounded by hills and mountains with hardly another building in sight.

We love our land at Troutbeck and hope you will too but it is not for those who expect luxurious convenience.  Quite the opposite, it is for those who wear boots and wellies and who enjoy the simple life and simple comforts.

However the nearest  pub is a ten minutes walk away and also a bus stop to take you into Keswick ,the heart of the northern lakes.

Just one other thing.  We have a small grass airstrip on part of the land, in the main for small, relatively quiet microlights which land and take off occasionally.  It is not a mini-Heathrow.

To continue the ethos of a bothy, we ask our guest to leave the bothy  clean and tidy, the way they found it.

So if you feel this simple, gadget-free environment would suit you then please call Roger and Mo on 07836272033 or email roger@lakedistrictgyroplanes.co.uk

Prices start from £80 per night, one well behaved dog is welcome at an additional charge of £10 during your visit.
Minimum booking 2 nights.

Wonderful endorsements from recent guests:

"If you're looking for an authentic bothy experience, you may have just found it. I've stayed here in mid summer and Winter alike, and no doubt i'll be back again. The bothy has all the basic needs, a solid roof, a large wood burner, simple cooking facilties and a compost toilet. Out here your only neighbours are sheep and whatever wildlife wanders past, and the peace and quiet make you feel wonderfully removed from the rest of the world.

And if you ever fancy a pint of Wainwright’s Gold, The Troutbeck Inn is only a 15–20 minute stroll or a quick 5-minute drive away — it also serves great food.

Roger, the bothy’s owner, is one of those people who make a place feel even more welcoming. He ferried our bags up by quad bike and trailer, which was a lovely touch, and his warmth and connection to the Lake District make you feel like you’re experiencing part of its heritage too.

This isn’t just somewhere to rest tired legs after a day on the hills — it’s a place to let your mind rest too, breathe deeply, and soak in your surroundings."
Harry.

"We had a fabulous weekend and felt so fortunate to experience such a special place. Convenient for accessing the northern lakes(we hiked Blencathra and the fells around Martindale)the bothy is nevertheless in a beautiful secluded spot.
We woke to skylarks and curlews after an evening watching the northern lights, thanks to the lack of light pollution.
The bothy itself is perfect. Everything needed for a luxury ‘glamping’ experience without the modern world being able to intrude.
Please don’t change anything."
Chris and Jennifer.
Derbyshire.

"It has been an absolute privilege to stay in this beautiful Bothy. Not only did it keep me sheltered from the elements in such comfort, but it made me feel like I’d finally come home. I’ve truly fallen in love with the place and it’s an absolute wrench to leave. This visit has been emotionally restorative and so much more.
I will be back.Thank you so very much."
Amanda,
County Durham.

"We recently had the pleasure of staying at Troutbeck Bothy and it was an absolutely excellent experience. If you’re looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, this is the perfect place to be. The Bothy is a cosy and relaxing retreat, complete with log fire and candle lit lounge that truly captures the rustic charm of the farm. The location of the Bothy is also stunning, with hills and mountain views on all sides. It’s the perfect place to unwind and soak in the beautiful scenery. The hosts,Roger and Mo, were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Situated so close to Ullswater and Aira Force falls, we had a fabulous experience at the Bothy and would definitely recommend it to family and friends. Very relaxing and rejuvenating getaway."
Best wishes,
Arun,Devika and Ashwin.

"For those wanting to get away from the daily grind, The Bothy is the ideal tonic to ease the stress and get back to a more relaxed and natural way of holidaying. Think of the Bothy as glamping;Candlelight,a wood burning stove and cooking on gas whilst relaxing on rattan sofas makes for the perfect back-to-basics approach to days out under the dark skies of the Northern Lake District."
Brett and Tracey.
Cheshire.

"It was hard to say goodbye to the Bothy at the end of our stay.It was wonderful to spend a few days next to the fire, warming up after a hike, surrounded by candles and the beautiful scenery around us. Roger was wonderful, suggesting hiking routes and recommending pubs to visit as well. We hiked Blencathra and Gowbarrow this time, but we’ll definitely be back for Helvellyn soon.
Looking forward to coming to visit again soon, we’re aiming for early summer.Enjoy springtime in the Lakes and thank you again for such a wonderful visit."

Emilia.
Clapham, London.
