In 2022, Hadrian’s Wall celebrates its 1900th anniversary, and Hadrian’s Wall 1900 is a year long festival dedicated to this impressive milestone.
Built in AD122 to protect the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, today Hadrian’s Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands as a reminder of times gone by. Stretching for 73 miles from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west, its defensive structures continue down the Cumbrian coast south of Maryport, making this a fantastic place to visit in the Lake District, Cumbria.
From 24th January – 23rd December 2022, a series of events will take place along the wall to mark 1900 years since it was built – and there’s something for everyone to enjoy! Contemporary artworks, family-friendly exhibitions and events, food festivals, and even a city of lights celebration in Carlisle await. Each season brings something different and unique, so whenever you’re planning to visit, there will be something to experience at this vibrant celebration of Roman history.
The Hadrian’s Wall 1900 Festival will launch on Hadrian’s birthday on Monday 24 January 2022, with a yearlong programme, culminating with Saturnalia on 17-23 December 2022.
