About

Workington is an ancient market and industrial town at the mouth of the River Derwent. Some parts of the town north of the River Derwent date back to Roman times. It was in the 18th century, with the exploitation of the local iron ore and coal pits, that Workington expanded to become a major industrial town and port.
Workington has received £45 million to rebuild the town. It has one of the safest multi-storey cars parks in the country with secure parking for 430 cars. An innovative £2.74m public art programme including new town square, interactive clock and attractive, traffic free walkways.

As well as the new shopping centre you can also explore Workington's history. The Curwen family name has been synonymous with the history of Workington for over 700 years and in Curwen Park, you will find the remains of Curwen Hall. You cannot enter the ruin, but it is nevertheless, an impressive site. To find out what it looked like in its heyday, walk 200m across the park to the Helena Thompson Museum which houses a scale model of the Hall. Bequeathed to the town by Helena Thompson, the various galleries give an intimate flavour of the town's development and heritage. Entrance is free too.
