About

At the George and Dragon, our commitment to exceptional food has garnered us numerous awards throughout the years. We attribute our success to our field-to-fork philosophy, where we prioritize home-grown ingredients and showcase the culinary expertise of our talented kitchen team.

To ensure the highest quality and utmost freshness, we take pride in breeding our own pedigree shorthorns and rare breed pork. The roe deer and red deer venison featured on our menu are sourced from the woods and fells surrounding us, and just two miles away at Askham Hall, our kitchen gardens flourish, providing us with an abundance of seasonal fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Beyond our own land, we embrace the treasures of nature by foraging for wild garlic, mushrooms, and berries, adding a touch of authenticity to our dishes. Complementing our home-grown produce, we work closely with local suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability and ethical practices.

We're incredibly excited to welcome back head chef Paul Mckinnon.

Paul was the head chef at the George and Dragon when we purchased the pub and first opened the doors in 2008. He stayed with us until 2013 after helping open the kitchen garden cafe at what is now our Michelin starred sister hotel Askham Hall.

In the time he's been away from the company he's worked with Terry Laybourne at 21 Hospitality. He's also worked at the Lakes Distillery. Paul was involved with food development for Westmorland and Gloucester Services and has been helping the Langstaff County Inn at Borrowdale.

We're grateful to have him back in the company.

We strive to accommodate the diverse dietary needs and preferences of our guests. We always have vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options available. Families are warmly welcomed, and we offer a dedicated children's menu to ensure that even our youngest diners have a memorable culinary experience. Well-behaved dogs are more than welcome to join you in our bar area, and for overnight guests, we provide a specially curated Doggy Welcome Pack, complete with treats, a map of local walks, and poo bags, ensuring that your four-legged companions feel right at home.

Stay in Style

For those seeking an overnight stay, the George and Dragon offers 10 individually designed bedrooms that exude character and charm. Each room features unique furniture and artwork from Charles' family collection, ensuring a truly distinctive experience. Sink into our fabulous beds adorned with luxurious linens, and enjoy the convenience of en-suite bathrooms in every room. Whether you're traveling alone, with your family, or accompanied by your furry friend, we have the perfect room to suit your needs.
