Ulverston is a vibrant market town with lots to discover. Known for its fantastic arts scene, it’s a great place to discover cultural attractions. From comic duo Stan & Laurel to performances by world-class artists; heritage museums to country halls, there’s lots to experience here.
Ulverston and Backbarrow are accessible by road via the A590; Holker is just a short drive away via the B5278. Stagecoach buses serve Backbarrow and Ulverston on the X6 service. Let's go...

The Coro, Ulverston
Arts, culture and entertainment venue The Coro can be found in the centre of Ulverston. This historic building hosts a wide variety of shows and events throughout the year, with local and international artists gracing the stage. Created in 1920, today The Coro continues its original mission to provide a place to go to enjoy theatre, music, dance and entertainment – there’s everything from family friendly fun to opera and comedy.
As well as the regular programme of performances, there are also workshops and art exhibitions. Keep an eye out for what’s on, including family friendly shows and events during the school holidays.
Parking is available in Ulverston, with six car parks within a 10 minute walk of The Coro. The closest car park is on Theatre Street. Most car parks are free after 6pm – always double check to be sure. If you are planning on travelling by public transport, please check bus and train timetables to ensure they correspond with performance times.

Stan and Ollie statue outside The Laurel & Hardy Museum, Ulverston
Did you know that one half of comic duo Laurel & Hardy was born in Ulverston? Stan Laurel began his life here, and The Laurel & Hardy Museum is dedicated to the famous pair. Discover an extensive collection of films, letters, photographs, posters, film stills and personal items; and learn more about the early life of Stan Laurel.
Located in a 1930s cinema complex, this quirky attraction screens Laurel & Hardy films throughout the day; there are also evening comedy shows to enjoy.
Opening Hours: 10am to 5pm daily to 31st October 2025. Check website for winter opening hours.
Parking is available in Ulverston, with a number of car parks within walking distance. Stagecoach bus X6 serves Ulverston, with the Ulverston Library bus stop just a short walk from the museum.

Swarthmoor Hall
Just outside of Ulverston is 17th century Swarthmoor Hall. George Fox, founder of the Quakers established a meeting place at the hall. It is often credited as being the cradle of Quakerism. Visit the beautifully restored atmospheric old hall and wander the woodland trails, formal gardens and wildflower meadow.
Opening Hours: Wednesday to Friday 11am to 4pm

Holker Hall & Gardens, Cark
Discover 25 acres of woodland and gardens, with a Victorian country house at the heart, at Holker Hall & Gardens. Wander the grounds before heading inside to explore the Hall, which remains a family home to this day.
A regular programme of events and festivals takes place throughout the year, including Christmas markets; a chilli eating competition; and spring fair. Keep an eye out for what’s coming up – there’s always something to enjoy.
The Courtyard Café serves homecooked food and the gift shops offers items for home and garden.

Lakeland Motor Museum, Backbarrow
Marvel at classic cars and learn the story of 20th century transport at the award-winning Lakeland Motor Museum at Backbarrow. There are over 30,000 exhibits, including 140 classic cars and motorbikes. Discover displays highlighting Donald Campbell’s record breaking career; pedal cars; the Isle of Man TT; and more.
Away from automobiles, visitors can also take a trip down memory lane with exhibitions showcasing local history, plus period displays like a 1950s café, shop fronts, and women’s fashion.
Families are welcome, with kids activities including an interactive quiz to enjoy on their visit, with a souvenir prize once they’ve completed it. The Lakeland Motor Museum is also dog friendly.
Open hours: daily, 9:30am – 4:30pm
