Cosmic Cumbria Evening: Talk, Film & Exhibition Launch

Featuring the Cosmic Cumbria Astrophotography Exhibition launch, Film Premiere of Cumbria Night Skies and a talk by Professor Roger William Lewis Jones. This has been programmed to coincide with Cumbria Dark Skies Festival and the North Pennines Stargazing Festival.

The evening, organised by Eden Valley and Penrith Astronomy Group, will begin with the official opening of Cosmic Cumbria, an interactive Astrophotography Exhibition which will take you on a cosmic journey from Earth through our Solar System to the outer reaches of the Milky Way and beyond to other Galaxies Far Far Away! The Exhibition includes photography from Penrith & District Camera Club, Cockermouth Astronomical Society, Eddington Astronomical Society (Kendal) and Furness & South Lakeland Astronomical Society. This exhibition has been made possible with the support of Cumbrian Stone, Lakes and Dales Co-op and the former Penrith Lottery.

This will be followed by the first public film screening of the "Cumbria night skies" - a spectacular walk-through space captured by local astronomers featured in our Exhibition.

After a short interval, uncover the Secrets of the Universe in a talk by Professor Roger William Lewis Jones, Principal Investigator of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (UK) project and Head of Physics at Lancaster University. Roger will provide an inspiring perspective into one of his projects -the Vera C Rubin observatory in Chile. With an 8.4 metre telescope, the world's largest digital astronomical camera, will be repeatedly scanning the sky in exquisite detail for the next 10 years, allowing studies from dark matter through galaxy evolution to asteroids and 'Earth grazers'. Even with its early data, there has been some stunning results. Roger will explain what is it that leads a particle physicist like himself to have an important role in this project.
