Explore the Lake District's rich and varied landscapes through both lens and brush on this immersive three-day residential retreat at Rydal Hall, led by artist Georgina Hartley-Willows.
The course begins with a short guided walk through the surrounding countryside, woodland and gardens, taking photographs to capture the light, mood and atmosphere of the setting. Back at Rydal Hall, Georgina will guide you through digitally editing your images to enhance colour, tone and composition using accessible tools (Photoshop, Photopea or Snapseed - all suitable for smartphones, tablets or laptops). These edits become valuable studies for understanding the colours and layers you'll translate into paint.
You'll then prepare your canvas properly using gesso and sandpaper, before building up your painting in layers with professional-grade, colourfast acrylics - starting with the sky and background and working forward to foreground details. To finish, palette knives are used to add texture, energy and depth, encouraging expressive mark-making that captures the drama of the landscape.
Whether you're a beginner or an experienced painter, this course encourages observation, creativity and a joyful engagement with nature and colour.
Price includes the course, accommodation, meals and refreshments. To book, email mail@rydalhall.org or call 015394 32050.
