An introduction to four different styles of printmaking suited to beginners or improvers to give a good grounding in producing a range of direct drawing prints. The course will cover Drypoint, Aquatint etching, Monoprint and Carborundum printmaking.
What will the course cover and how will it be taught?
Each session will begin with a short slideshow of examples from art history of what can be produced by each technique. The course will be taught by example, and knowledge of each technique will be built up by following stages towards the final piece.
Drypoint is a direct drawing printmaking technique which involves scratching a design into a polymer plate. Ink is then added to the plate and then passed through an etching press with paper to create the final print.
Aquatint etching is a direct drawing technique where a tool is drawn onto a zinc plate covered with wax. The plate is then immersed in etching solution, and a line is incised into the plate. Aquatint layers of tone are then added later using spray paint, varnish and the etching solution.
Monoprint is a way of printing a drawing.
Carborundum printmaking uses grit to produce a painterly print.
