REACTOR is a new multimedia installation by Felicity Hammond, launching on Thursday 28th May at 6pm.
Set against the backdrop of Barrow's defence industry, as the home of the UK's only nuclear submarine manufacturer, REACTOR imagines a fictional scenario in which an autonomous submarine becomes aware of its own autonomy and questions whether to follow or refuse its orders. As autonomous warfare technologies continue to develop globally, this work feels especially relevant.
Grounded in conversations with local residents connected to Barrow's shipyard, the installation reflects on the town's deep ties to the defence industry, opening up space to consider the complex relationship between technological innovation and global responsibility.
Hammond's previous exhibition with us, In Defence of Industry, won the Lumen Prize in 2018 and we're thrilled to present this ambitious new commission!
