Join Rob Baxter at Muncaster Castle on Tuesday 29 September for a fascinating talk on the history of the Seaton Priory Estate and the Pennington Family.
Seaton Priory was a rather obscure medieval nunnery near Bootle in West Cumbria. In this talk, Robert will examine its history and the descent of its premises to form a manorial estate of a branch of the Penningtons of Muncaster.
Robert Baxter is senior archivist and joint professional lead of Cumbria Archives, the statutory local government service of both Cumberland Council and Westmorland & Furness Council. His career began with the service in 1994, he was an archivist at King's College London from 1997-2002, and he was archivist at Whitehaven Archive Centre from 2002-2020, and is now based at Kendal Archive Centre. During his time at Whitehaven he worked closely on the Pennington of Muncaster collection held there, and created the archives exhibition held at Muncaster Castle in 2008 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the grants of Muncaster to Alan de Pennington, and of the grants of Ravenglass fair and market.

Please come to our Church Gate entrance to park. This can be found approximately 1/3 of a mile south of our main car park along the A595.
Muncaster can also be accessed via public transport. Northern Rail operates the Cumbrian Coast railway line; our closest station is Ravenglass for Eskdale. Stagecoach operates the 7 and X7 bus routes between Whitehaven and Barrow which stop at our main car park, as well as Ravenglass Railway Station.
If you are coming on foot from Ravenglass, there are two routes. The simplest route is via the main road which is about a mile with a pavement all the way and will take 20-30 minutes. Alternative follow the Eskdale Trail cycle route, which will take you past the Roman Bath House and through delightful scenery, but takes between 30 and 40 minutes to walk and may be muddy in places.
