Birkdale House is a stunning Victorian residence on the Matson Ground Estate, in the heart of the Lake District National Park. With its private, secluded grounds, you could be forgiven for thinking that you’re miles from anywhere, well off the beaten track, yet this elegant property is just a short stroll from the bustling village of Bowness-on-Windermere, with its array of shops, bars and restaurants.
Surrounded by acres of private farmland, Birkdale House has been lovingly refurbished by the owners, maintaining the traditional character of a Lakeland home, while oozing sophisticated luxury.
The property accommodates ten guests in five beautiful, well-appointed bedrooms, with fantastic views of Lake Windermere, the spectacular Lakeland Fells or the idyllic estate grounds on its doorstep. A well-equipped kitchen, an elegant drawing room with a log-burning stove, a cosy library and a traditional dining room, which comfortably sits up to twelve guests, offer a living space which is both stylish and spacious.
The once conventional cellar is now a unique, vibrant hideaway brimming with character. Enjoy your favourite film in the brand-new cinema room with its 75” screen and surround sound speaker system, or challenge friends and family to a few frames of pool or a game of table-football.
The charming grounds and surrounding fells are nothing short of a delight for lovers of the Lake District, and a never-ending playground for man’s best friend. Local walks for all abilities literally begin at the front door. The summit of Brantfell can be reached in just fifteen minutes, while the Biskey Howe viewpoint is a ten-minute walk. From both, you are treated to breath-taking, panoramic views of Lake Windermere, the Langdale Pikes and the western fells beyond.
For families looking for somewhere to holiday together, or a large group with a special occasion to celebrate, Birkdale House is the perfect choice. It is the ideal location from which to explore all the beauty that the Lake District has to offer, while the enchanting and elegant space inside the house allows you to relax and unwind, soaking up the peace, calm and comfort that are so evident from the moment you step inside.
The towns of Bowness, Windermere, Ambleside, Kendal, Hawkshead and Grasmere are all within 7 miles of the property. Blackwell Arts and Craft House, Brantwood, Dove Cottage, Wray Castle, Levens Hall and Holker Hall are historical places which are well worth a visit. Visitor Attractions include: The World of Beatrix Potter, The Old Laundry Theatre, The Lakes Visitor centre at Brockhole, The Lakes Aquarium, The Lakeland Motor Museum and Windermere Jetty.
In addition, there a numerous special events happening through out the year: Grasmere and Ambleside Sports (July), Rydal Show and numerous agricultural shows between May and August. Kendal Mountain Festival in October and the Brathay Marathon In May. Various lantern festivals, Christmas markets and Winter markets are held through November and December. The Great North Swim takes place in June.
Walks from the door connect to a wide network of footpaths. Biskey Howe viewpoint Is within 10 minutes' walk from the house with unrivalled views of the Langdales, Great Gable, Wetherlam and the western fell range including Coniston Old Man.
Room Descriptions: 5 bedrooms , 2 of which are en suite. 3 rooms have access to their own bathroom and there is a downstairs wetroom. 3 bedrooms have king sized beds, one twin and one zip and link.
All bed linen, towels and use of luxury robes are included in the stay. All fuel for fires and coal for BBQ is provided. Dog beds, treats and towels are provided. Beach towels provided for watersports or outdoor activities. Change over days can be Monday or Friday.
