To reach Brantholme B&B from the M6, follow these simple steps for a scenic drive into the heart of the Lake District: Exit at Junction 36: Leave the M6 and follow signs for the A590 (becoming the A591) toward Kendal/Windermere. Continue to Ambleside: Stay on the A591, bypassing Kendal and passing through Windermere. Follow the road along the shores of Lake Windermere until you reach Ambleside. Enter the Village: As you enter Ambleside, follow the one-way system. Stay in the left-hand lane following signs for the A591 toward Keswick. Find Compston Road: Turn left onto Compston Road (the main one-way street). Final Turn: Take the first left onto Stony Lane (located between the shops). Brantholme is situated just ahead on this quiet "backwater" road. Note: Private free parking is available on-site, so you can unload your luggage immediately upon arrival.
Reaching Brantholme B&B via public transport is straightforward, as Ambleside is well-connected to the main Lake District rail and bus networks. 1. By Train The nearest train station is Windermere (approx. 4.5 miles away). From the South/London: Take the West Coast Mainline to Oxenholme Lake District, then catch the frequent connecting "branch line" train to Windermere (a 20-minute journey). From the North/Scotland: Some services also connect via Oxenholme or Carlisle. 2. By Bus from Windermere Station Once you arrive at Windermere Station, head to the bus stop directly outside the terminal: Routes 555 or 599: These frequent services run every 20–30 minutes toward Ambleside/Grasmere. The Journey: It takes about 12–15 minutes. Where to Get Off: Alleviate at the Ambleside Bus Interchange (Kelsick Road). 3. The Short Walk to Brantholme From the Ambleside bus interchange, it is a simple 5-minute walk (approx. 450 meters): Walk toward the village center/Compston Road. Turn onto Millans Park (the quiet residential loop where the B&B is located). Brantholme is situated on this peaceful "backwater" road, easily accessible by foot with light luggage. Tip: If you have heavy bags, a taxi rank is located right outside Windermere Station. The fare to Ambleside is typically around £15–£20.
