About

The Royal Hotel, Dockray – Family run hotel, pub and restaurant in Dockray, Cumbria

Traditional family run Lakeland hotel

Nestled in the hamlet of Dockray, The Royal is a traditional family run hotel, pub and restaurant dating back over 500 years and steeped in Lakeland history. Ideally located close to Lake Ullswater and Aira Force waterfall, you can expect a warm welcome whether you are dressed for dinner or straight off the fells.

Relaxed bedrooms with hearty breakfast

Our 10 bedrooms offer relaxed comfort in our historic Lakeland pub. We offer a choice of Standard and Superior Rooms, arranged as either double or twin beds on the 1st and 2nd floors of the hotel, with the option of extra beds in some rooms. All of our room rates include a hearty cooked breakfast each morning, fuelling you for the Ullswater valley on your doorstep.

Standard and Superior rooms

Standard Rooms feature king size beds, en suite showers, flat screen TV and complimentary tea and coffee. Superior Rooms have been beautifully refurbished, with spacious bathrooms including bath and shower, plus flat screen TV and complimentary tea and coffee.

Family stays in the Ullswater valley

Our brand new Catbells family room is perfect for families, with a king size bed, bunk beds and an extra pull out bed offering plenty of space for a family of five. We also have one triple room, and our Superior Rooms can take an extra bed, ideal for those staying with children.

Dog friendly rooms and bar

We welcome well behaved dogs in the bar, and many of our bedrooms are dog friendly. Please get in touch when making your reservation to request a dog friendly room so that you and your four legged companion can relax in comfort after a day on the fells.

Cumbrian hospitality and local produce

The Royal at Dockray is a family run traditional country hotel offering the best of Cumbrian hospitality. The Ullswater valley is a food lover’s paradise, and our pub and restaurant strive to source and promote local suppliers with some of the best produce on our doorstep, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

Wholesome Sunday lunches

Sunday lunch is served every Sunday from 12 until 2.30pm. Work up an appetite walking up Gowbarrow or down to Aira Force waterfall, then enjoy wholesome, homemade dishes in our warm, relaxed Lakeland pub.

Seasonal menus for every taste

Our seasonal menus and daily specials often feature slow braised lamb shanks, fresh Cumbrian trout and legendary homemade shortcrust pies. A childrens menu is always available, together with a variety of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free dishes so that everyone can find something to enjoy.

Beer garden with Lakeland views

Our wonderful beer garden, described as the best this side of the Pennines, is the perfect place for a post hike drink or whiling away a warm summer afternoon. From regeneratively farmed pedigree shorthorn cattle at Gowbarrow Hall supplying mince for our burgers, to local venison, slow grown pork, free range eggs from Lucy’s chickens and herbs from our own kitchen garden, we are proud of the ingredients that make their way to your plate.

Real ales from independent breweries

Being a free house gives us the freedom to work with many small Cumbrian breweries, with real ales from Keswick, Tirril, Coniston and Cumbrian Legendary Ales regularly appearing on the bar. Book direct with us for the best price, guaranteed, and start planning your next escape to Dockray and the Ullswater valley.
