There’s no more authentic way of getting around the Lake District than aboard a boat. They ply the waters of Windermere, Ullswater, Coniston and Derwentwater, serving piers and jetties around each lake. Coniston Water is home to the famous Steam Yacht Gondola, a beautifully rebuilt Victorian steam-powered yacht originally launched in 1859; which evokes the sophistication of a bygone era. All four lakes also have watersport centres where you can hire your own boat – whether a row boat, a sail boat or even an electric one.
