Canoe Training, Coniston

Key information

9am Saturday 18th to 4pm Monday 20th May 2024
(Other dates may be arranged between May to September. Please contact for details.)

Brown Howe National Park Car Park, Coniston LA12 8DW

About the Event

Difficulty Level: Introductory

Cost: £200 per person (members £140) plus canoe hire £50 per boat. Or £80 per person per day

Participants can join for 1, 2 or 3 days depending on their requirements.

This course will cover all the skills needed to undertake a multi-day canoe journey in UK waters. We will look at paddling skills, expedition planning and packing, and (optionally) wild camping on a lakeshore. Expert tuition and positive support will be provided to participants throughout the course. Canoes and paddling equipment will be available to borrow for the course, but if you prefer to bring your own that is fine. Participants should bring their own camping equipment and stoves, although some equipment may be available to borrow for the event from our store by pre-arrangement.

The Saturday night will be based at Hoathwaite NT campsite, near Torver LA21 8AX, but it is not required to stay there and the cost of this is not included in the price. Saturday basic canoe paddling skills for efficient and enjoyable paddling on flat water. Saturday evening in the pub. Sunday will cover more advanced journeying skills and safety and rescue. Finishing at 4pm.

Sunday night and Monday will be optional additional training to cover overnight camps and an introduction to moving water skills. This has been added as specific skills training for our Caledonian Canal trip in June and River Spey trip in August. Monday will be an introduction to moving water skills.

Food and accommodation are not included.
