About

Canoe Expedition Training Weekend

Learn the skills to undertake canoe expeditions including paddling skills and wild camping skills. Due to demand I am extending this course for an additional optional day. This course takes place in the heart of the English Lake District on England's second largest lake.

Key information

9am Saturday 22nd to 4pm Monday 24th July 2023
(Other dates may be arranged.between May to September. Please contact for details.)

Glenridding, Glenridding, Penrith CA11, UK

About the Event

Difficulty Level: Introductory

Cost: £180 per person (members £120) for the standard 2 day package, canoe hire £50 per boat.

Participants can join for 1, 2 or 3 days depending on their requirements.

This course will cover all the skills needed to undertake a multi-day canoe journey in UK waters. We will look at paddling skills, expedition planning and packing, and (optionally) wild camping on a lakeshore. Expert tuition and positive support will be provided to participants throughout the course.

Canoes and paddling equipment will be available to borrow for the course, but if you prefer to bring your own that is fine. Participants should bring their own camping equipment and stoves, although some equipment may be available to borrow for the event from our store by pre-arrangement.

The Saturday night will be based at Gillside campsite, but it is not required to stay there and the cost of this is not included in the price.

Saturday basic canoe paddling skills for efficient and enjoyable paddling on flat water. Saturday evening in the pub.

Sunday will cover more advanced journeying skills and safety and rescue. Finishing at 4pm.

Sunday night and Monday will be optional additional training to cover overnight camps and an introduction to moving water skills. This has been added as specific skills training for our River Spey trip in August. Additional cost for Sunday night and Monday: £75 per person (members £50).

Sunday night will be a supported overnight camp on the lakeshore.

Monday will be an introduction to moving water skills.

Food and accommodation are not included.

Course tutor: Stuart Lockton
