About

Historic house based on a medieval pele tower with substantial 17th, 18th and 19thC additions. The house contains fine collections of furniture, ceramics, tapestry and portraits and is still a private residence. Walk around the wonderful walled garden which are still surrounded by a medieval forest, you could spend all day at this historic house. Look out for events throughout the year.

The Gardens

There is still the feel of a medieval forest as one approaches Hutton, as the house is largely surrounded by trees. The layout of the garden surrounding the house has not changed since 1705, when it was described as being in very good condition.

Visit the beautiful 18thC walled garden which dates back to the 1730s, now a spectacular flower garden with beds and borders of spring bulbs, herbaceous and annual flowers, set against the dramatic backdrop of the house and trees.

The terraces and topiary, to the south and west of the house act as a delicate foil to a massive strength of the architecture and were considerably restored in the 19thC.

The Cloisters Tea Room

The Cloisters Tea Room serves a range of delicious home-made light refreshments. We use free-range eggs and locally produced food wherever possible, including fresh vegetables grown in the gardens and honey from our bees. The tearoom is open to the public when the House is open.

Disabled access to house ground floor only and to gardens, via gravel paths.
