Join Peter Hughes at Muncaster Castle on Tuesday 28 July for a fascinating talk on Cumbria's gardening heritage.
Cumbria has a wealth of history in its great gardens. This talk will look behind some of those gardens into the lives of the people who made them and the fanatical way in which they pursued their passion to create a great garden; by way of example, Guillaume Beaumont who brought topiary to Levens, the plant hunters who went off in search of rare rhododendrons for the gardens at Muncaster, the Yellow Earl who spent a fortune at Lowther, and John Ruskin who retired to a reclusive life at Brantwood and brought Arts and Crafts to the Lakes.

Muncaster Castle, RavenglassDiscover the captivating charm of Muncaster Castle, a historic gem nestled on the stunning Lake…
Please come to our Church Gate entrance to park. This can be found approximately 1/3 of a mile south of our main car park along the A595.
Muncaster can also be accessed via public transport. Northern Rail operates the Cumbrian Coast railway line; our closest station is Ravenglass for Eskdale. Stagecoach operates the 7 and X7 bus routes between Whitehaven and Barrow which stop at our main car park, as well as Ravenglass Railway Station.
If you are coming on foot from Ravenglass, there are two routes. The simplest route is via the main road which is about a mile with a pavement all the way and will take 20-30 minutes. Alternative follow the Eskdale Trail cycle route, which will take you past the Roman Bath House and through delightful scenery, but takes between 30 and 40 minutes to walk and may be muddy in places.
