Stress Busting In The Great Cumbrian Outdoors

In Cumbria we are blessed with so many opportunities to get outdoors from public parks to woodlands, lakes, mountains and the coastline with its mudflats, sand dunes and beaches. A desire to experience the landscape is one of the key appeals for visitors to the region, with 94% saying they felt a boost to their general health and wellbeing during their visit, according to research by Cumbria Tourism.
FIVE TIPS TO BEAT STRESS AND FEEL MORE POSITIVE…

1) BE ACTIVE

One of the best ways of combatting low energy is to get moving. Regular exercise will help keep you positive, it’s good for your physical health and also releases your happy hormone - serotonin - so it makes you feel good too! It doesn’t have to be a 5K run or a mission to reach the top of Scafell Pike in record time, just a simple stroll through a park or woodland will do it.

2) GET OUTSIDE

Grab the chance to get outside when you can. Fresh air and particularly sunlight stimulate the pineal gland to release serotonin and lift mood. Noticing things that you can see, hear, smell and feel in the environment around you helps to improve focus and bring your mind into the present.

3) EAT HEALTHILY

Tempting as it is to reach for processed comfort foods, try to be aware of your food choices. Eating a wide range of freshly prepared meat, fish, fresh vegetables, fruit and nuts can help to sustain your immune system and drink plenty of water.

4) CONNECT

A phone call, Facetime or coffee with someone you’re close to is a great way of making you feel more connected and less isolated over the coming month.

5) FORWARD THINKING

Give yourself something to look forward to. Arrange a night out with friends, book a weekend break or even plan your summer holiday.
The importance of wellbeing is not only important in our personal time but in our work lives too, especially with many people having deskbound jobs. See Events launched their corporate Wellbeing workshops for this very reason.
The sessions can incorporate group energisers, outdoor pursuits including orienteering, canoeing and bush craft and mindfulness exercises such as mindful walking, the Japanese art of Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing) and immersions in nature.

Whether it’s simply being surrounded by beautiful scenery, or actively getting out on the fells and forests, taking time out to reconnect with nature and share meaningful experiences with friends could be key to busting stress, and helping us to lead happier, healthier lives.
