Claire & Gareth Mc Keever are the owners of Pure Lakes Skincare and we recently sat down with Claire to talk about life in the Lakes.

Claire is a Lake District lass and the Mc Keever's and their young family live in Far Sawrey, home to Claire's family for a number of generations.

We started by asking Claire what she values most about where she lives.

"We feel very privileged to live in such a beautiful part of our country and that in itself is wonderful. We also have a fantastic local school in Hawkshead and with a commute that involves the Windermere car ferry, and my parents very close by, there is much to be thankful for."

Do you find it a challenge juggling a young family with running your own business?

"Gareth & I work as a team both at home and in the business but even with this it can be quite a struggle and if I am honest I often find myself lying awake worrying. Our children are very young (their ages range from 2 to 8 years old) and, as a mother, I don't ever feel I have the perfect balance. The flexibility of running our own business definitely helps but there is always something to worry about."

How has Pure Lakes coped with lockdown?

"We have an amazing team and together we quickly repurposed our production and launched our hand sanitiser. We were also aware of how much pressure the NHS and care homes were under, as well as vulnerable children, and launched campaigns to support all of these.

'Overall, whilst trade orders dried up, the online business proved resilient and this, combined with our social purpose, really helped us navigate challenging times."

What does the future hold?

"We make all our products by hand, using only the highest quality plant ingredients, and quite simply we want to continue to make skincare products that are very beneficial for the skin.

I am not sure what tomorrow might bring but looking out over the next 12 months we will continue to do this, keeping our heads down and focusing on what we love.

As a small family business we are very grateful to all our customers, and we hope to repay their loyalty by continuing to make products that are kind to all skin types, as well as to our natural environment."
