After refuelling, head inside the Museum’s galleries to experience WRECKED! This temporary interactive exhibition trail is perfect for families to do together. Uncover hidden treasures and sunken secrets of the lakes most intriguing shipwrecks. It’s an indoor and outdoor experience, so remember your coats and wrap up warm if it’s cold weather.

The shop is a joy and full of boat related gifts alongside delightful children’s toys and local brands such as Pure Lakes, perfect for finding stocking fillers or presents.

Just a short walk from Bowness town centre, the museum is easy to get to on foot, by car or by boat. Parking is free on site if you are visiting the Museum or café.

Only a 6 minute drive away from Windermere Jetty Museum is Blackwell – the Arts & Crafts house - a rare architectural gem from the early 20th century. If you’re interested in architecture, design and craft a visit to Blackwell is a must. As you step inside you’ll see the lovely decorations on the Christmas tree and feel the warm festive spirit in a building designed to be a home, by noted architect M.H. Baillie Scott. There will be seasonal music and carols in the afternoon as part of a series of mini concerts in the main hall on Friday 10, Tuesday 14, Friday 17 and Friday 24 December, see the Blackwell website for details. With a peaceful, tranquil setting and tremendous views over Windermere and the Coniston Fells, the house never fails to inspire.

Whilst walking round the house you can experience the current art exhibition Class, Covid and Cumbria which runs until 27 February. There is no extra charge for the exhibition, you just need to pay entry to the house. Featuring a visually seductive large-scale tapestry from Turner Prize winning artist Grayson Perry, a bespoke textile installation created by Rosie Galloway-Smith and the work of two celebrated local photographers Juliet Klottrup and Joseph Hardman (1893-1972) who span distinctly different generations. You’ll also be able to see work by community groups as part of Lakeland Arts’ MEND project.

Take time to reflect on Blackwell’s outstanding interiors, everyone has a favourite room, and chat about the exhibition as you enjoy a festive themed lunch, mince pie, cake and drinks in the delightful tea room.

A trip to Blackwell is not complete without a browse in the Contemporary Craft Shop. Here you’ll find a range of beautiful and unique gifts for friends, family and children. The pieces are selected for their quality and beauty as well as upholding the ethos of the Arts & Crafts movement, from fine jewellery and textiles to ceramics, creations in glass and wood, and inspiring art and design books.

Both these venues are part of Lakeland Arts which offers annual membership. If you are likely to visit several times a year this can work out as a good way to save money, whilst helping to look after the historic buildings and collections for the future. It also makes a good gift for that difficult to buy for person!
