10 reasons to visit the Lake District, Cumbria this spring

Spring has sprung, and the Lake District, Cumbria, is the perfect place to be. With warmer weather comes a fresh wash of colour, as well as the promise of more time spent outdoors. From family fun to outdoor adventure, here are ten reasons why you should put a trip to the Lake District, Cumbria, on your bucket list this spring.

Our landscapes come alive in spring, as fresh seasonal colour sweeps across the county. Daffodils, blossom, bluebells and green leaves can all be seen in abundance depending on the weather and when you visit – and there are plenty of places to see them across the Lake District, Cumbria. Why not head to one of our forests, Grizedale or Whinlatter, to witness the shift in seasons as the trees and the ground beneath come to life?

Visiting the Lake District, Cumbria, with your family? Spring sees plenty of family fun across the area, with the Easter holidays as well as warmer weather meaning there’s so much to see and do both indoors and out. Visit farm animals, including a few new arrivals, at Walby Farm Park; explore attractions like Muncaster Castle, Birdoswald Roman Fort, and Brockhole-on-Windermere; and plenty more.

Spring sees a whole host of events take place in the Lake District, Cumbria. Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake hosts a stage production of powerful coming of age story, Kes, based on the much loved novel and film. Step back to Roman times at UNESCO World Heritage Site Hadrian’s Wall: the #HW1900 festival is taking place throughout the year, and celebrates 1900 years since the iconic Roman Frontier was created.

Want to discover local food and drink? There’s a whole host of events taking place - from Taste Cumbria festivals including Taste Wigton on April 23rd, to the return of Sedbergh’s Artisan Markets in May.
 

It’s a great time to enjoy a golfing holiday

Did you know that the Lake District, Cumbria, is a fantastic place to enjoy a golfing holiday? There are courses along the coast from Grange to Silloth, as well as some fantastic courses inland like Carus Green and Kendal Golf Driving Range. To make planning your trip that much easier, Golf Lake District organises bespoke golf breaks across the area, and will sort everything including accommodation and transport; they can even add in outdoor activities like paddle boarding.

It’s no secret that the Lake District, Cumbria, is a fantastic place to go for a hike: there’s something for everyone, with challenging Wainwrights and low-level walks in abundance. With the warmer weather and longer days, walking is much more accessible - and our landscapes are ready to explore!

From sailing to canoeing, paddleboarding to wild swimming, there are so many ways to enjoy the water in the Lake District, Cumbria. If you’re a beginner, or need some support, we’ve got lots of great outdoor instructors and centres who can not only hire out equipment, but also guide you on how to use it.

While the weather may be warming up, the water can still be quite cold. Make sure to enjoy the water safely and be #AdventureSmart on your visit.

With warmer weather comes even more opportunity to experience our fantastic outdoor attractions. Stroll through the grounds of castles and historic country houses as they come into bloom: there’s Holker Hall near Grange-over-Sands; Lowther Castle near Penrith; Levens Hall near Kendal; and so many more.
 

Spring flavours step up to the plate

The Lake District, Cumbria, is a culinary hub, with fantastic places to eat and drink dotted across the county. We’ve got everything from Michelin stars (ten of them, to be exact!) to cosy country pubs and cafes, and our talented chefs love to make use of fresh, local and seasonal produce when creating their dishes. So, if you want to try out some of our locally grown spring food, you’ll be spoilt for choice!
 

Sleep beneath the stars

If sleeping under the stars takes your fancy, spring is a great time to give it a try. Whether it’s the full camping experience in your own tent, or a glamping holiday with a few more home comforts, there’s nothing like resting your head in one of our brilliant glamping, camping or motorhome sites.

Our nature and wildlife are waiting to be discovered

Throughout the year, you can see a variety of different types of wildlife and nature in the Lake District, Cumbria, and springtime is no exception! The peaceful Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve sees the return of its resident ospreys from Africa; you can see seals on the South Walney Nature Reserve; fulmars and herring gulls begin to gather on the cliffs of the St Bees Head nature reserve; and there are stunning sunsets across our two coastal Areas of Natural Beauty: Arnside & Silverdale, and the Solway Coast.
