Did you know? Cumbria has some of the darkest skies in the country - which means you could be proposing under an inky black sky filled with the glow of thousands of stars. From the Dark Sky Discover Site of Low Gillerthwaite, to the beautiful Wasdale Valley, there are plenty of locations to choose from. Don’t forget to pack a flask of something warm and celebratory!
On a boat
For a romantic and intimate proposal, it’s time to head out onto the water. Hire a rowing boat on one of our lakes and paddle away with your love, before popping the question in a secluded cove. In a castle
Begin your engagement like royalty with a proposal in one of the Lake District, Cumbria’s historic castles. There are plenty to choose from: Lowther Castle and Muncaster Castle both have stunning gardens in which to propose; Augill Castle offers comfortable rooms and a fantastic restaurant; while the ruins of Kendal Castle are rugged and romantic.
Hadrian’s Wall
Hadrian’s Wall has stood the test of time, so it’s the perfect place to cement your love with a marriage proposal! Nearby, the city of Carlisle is a great place to celebrate. There are plenty of impressive Roman forts along the Cumbrian section of the wall; alternatively, why not pack a picnic and pick a peaceful spot along the Hadrian’s Wall Path?
