Towns and Villages in the Eden Valley

There are some charming towns and villages dotted across the Eden Valley and North Pennines, with plenty to discover – from local markets to history and heritage.

Penrith is a great place to indulge in some retail therapy, with independent shops and national names; as well as its fascinating 14th century castle, which is well worth a visit. In the Eden Valley, discover a rich variety of bustling markets towns – including Alston, one of England’s highest.

The scenic Settle to Carlisle railway runs across the area, stopping at Appleby and Kirkby Stephen, making for a great way to get around; with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes as you travel.

Explore the towns and villages in and around Eden Valley and North Pennines, Cumbria including Alston, Appleby-in-Westmorland, Kirkby Stephen and Penrith.

  1. Alston
Pretty Alston’s main claim to fame is that, at 1000 feet above sea level, it is England’s highest market town.
  2. Appleby-in-Westmorland
    Appleby-in-Westmorland
This ancient market town and royal boroug is right in the heart of the Eden Valley and serves as the focal point for all of the surrounding villages and hamlets.
  3. Kirkby Stephen Railway Station on the Settle to Carlisle line
    Kirkby Stephen
The ancient market town of Kirkby Stephen has seen its fair share of historical intrigue. Dominated by a handsome market square and a fine church.
  4. Penrith Town Centre
    Penrith
Handsome, red-brick Penrith is the main gateway town for exploring the Eden Valley, while its easy road and rail links make Cumbria’s ancient capital a cinch to get in and out of.
