Paddleboarding in the Lake District, Cumbria

For a whole new way to experience the Lakes, why not head out on a paddleboard? An offshoot of surfing, paddleboarding is gaining in popularity – and the Lake District, Cumbria, is the perfect place to give it a go.

Many who try paddleboarding are instantly hooked, and it’s not hard to see why. Hailing from Hawaii, the sport is a great way to see the area: imagine paddling on the waters of one of our lakes as you admire the surrounding landscapes. Suitable for a range of abilities, it makes for a brilliant opportunity to experience water sports in the Lake District, Cumbria. Glide across the water as you balance on your board: don’t forget to take a moment to look around and take in the view!

You may also hear Paddleboarding referred to as SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding). At their core, they’re the same thing - the only difference being that SUP specifically refers to standing up on the board, whereas Paddleboarding includes kneeling down too.

Never tried it before? Not to worry! If you’re a beginner, or need to hire a board, head to one of our water sports centres where equipment is available alongside expert tuition. Get a feel for the water with your experienced instructor, who will help you do so safely and with confidence.

If you’re planning to go paddleboarding in the Lake District, Cumbria, be #AdventureSmart and make sure you’re well prepared for your adventure.

  • Wear a leash, buoyancy aid and wetsuit / insulating layers and windproof jacket
  • Check the forecast, and don’t be afraid to change your plans if needed
  • Know your limits: don’t push yourself too hard, and always plan for the least able member of your group
  • Make sure to take a fully charged mobile phone, in a waterproof pouch.
  • Go with a friend or, if going alone, make sure to let someone know where you’re going and what time you will be back.
  • Check which waters allow paddleboarding in the Lake District, Cumbria – some may require a permit, while others have restrictions around water sports. You can see full details here.
  • The AdventureSmart group has produced a special video full of great advice and tips to help keep you safe whilst Stand-up paddleboarding. Check out the video below.

You may leave the Lake District, but once you’ve been, it’ll never leave you.
