About

The slate mine tours at Honister Slate Mine offer an exciting one-of-a-kind experience suitable for all ages come rain or shine.

Set in a picturesque part of the Lake District at the top of Honister Pass, visitors can adventure deep into the belly of Fleetwith Pike and explore the mine with a guided tour through underground tunnels and caverns.

You’ll learn all about the history of the mine and its workers, and the production process of Westmoreland Green Slate, a natural rock material that has been quarried and used for centuries and is an important part of the Lake District’s heritage.

After the tour, visitors can visit the slate gift shop, which is filled with beautiful and unique items made from the slate that was mined here. There is also the Bait Cabin Café, which offers a delicious selection of food and drinks, making it the perfect place to relax and refuel after a morning of exploring.

The tours run daily at 10:30, 12:30 and 2:30. Under 8s can go free on the 10:30 am tours with each paying adult making this tour especially suitable for families.

Mine tours take approximately 90 minutes, and involve uneven terrain, plus descending approximately 50 steps (with a handrail) as well as illuminations and a mock explosion.

In addition to the mine tour, Honister Slate Mine also offers a great range of adventure activities, from their famous Via Ferrate Extreme and Climbing in the Mine, to high-wire bridges and scenic hikes, there's something for every age and ability.

So, whether you're a local or a visitor to the Lake District, Honister Slate Mine is a must-visit destination that offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
