"AT THE DROP OF ANOTHER HIPPOPOTAMUS" celebrating the comic genius of Flanders and Swann.
Mike is well-known in the area as a Jazz pianist and Musical Director. Bob was one of the founding members of Cockermouth Amateur Dramatic Society and was Artistic Director of Art Out West until retirement in 2013. They've worked together in CADS for almost 40 years but only recently discovered that they share a life-long love of Flanders' fabulous wordplay and Swann's endlessly inventive music.
Michael Flanders and Donald Swann enjoyed huge success in the late 50's and early 60's with two shows they referred to as "a farrago" : At the Drop of a Hat, and At the Drop of Another Hat. Many of the songs from those shows are instantly recognizable and, remarkably, appeal to all age-groups 60 years later.
Following a well-received performance at Cockermouth Live! Festival in July 2024, Mike and Bob have since toured widely, with over 20 performances across Cumbria; expect clever wordplay, timeless satire, and beautifully crafted songs. The Hippopotamus will be there, of course, as will the Gnu - but we won't spend all our time in the zoo. There are slow trains and a somewhat faster bus; designs for living and a hunt for a musical instrument.
