Things to Do - Carlisle & Hadrian's Wall

There’s no shortage of things to do in Carlisle and the surrounding areas, with something to suit every taste.

If you’re a history buff, you’ll be in your element here. Carlisle has witnessed centuries of history, and today there are lots of ways to learn more with museums, galleries and historic landmarks like Carlisle Cathedral and Carlisle Castle welcoming visitors. Nearby, the iconic Hadrian’s Wall - today a UNESCO World Heritage Site - is dotted with the fascinating remains of Roman turrets, towns and forts. Musems tell its amazing story, and allow you to see the remaining Roman artefacts up close. It's also a popular walking and cycling route, with plenty of places to rest and revive along the way.

As well as a rich history, Carlisle is blessed with some fantastic city centre parks bursting with greenery – perfect for a stroll, a picnic or a kickaround with the kids. The peaceful Talkin Tarn Country Park can be found just outside the city, as well as a whole host of attractions for all ages to enjoy. Want to get back to nature? There's plenty nearby offering lots for wildlife enthusiasts to discover.

If you’re looking to indulge in some retail therapy, you’ve come to the right place. Carlisle is a great place for shopping, with all the big names you’d expect from a modern city alongside independent stores and cafes.

Come sun down, Carlisle has a bustling nightlife scene, with theatre shows, cinema,  bars, pubs and restaurants to enjoy.

Whatever you are looking for and whatever the weather, there is always something to do in the great border city and its surrounds.
