Morecambe Bay

Watching the sun go down over Morecambe Bay is the stuff memories are made of. The whole stretch of coastline is a stunner, but the ever-shifting sands and salt marshes of Morecambe Bay, backed up a string of classic seaside towns that jealously guard their coastal views, is worth the trip alone.
The Arnside-Silverdale area, on the eastern side of the bay, is known for its superb walks and abundant wildlife – from birds to butterflies – so it’s not surprising that it’s been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
On the other side of the estuary, the Furness Peninsula drive from artsy, alternative Ulverston to busy sea town Barrow is the very definition of a ‘road with a view’ for its virtually uninterrupted coastal scenery – that is, if you can tear yourself away from Ulverston’s enticing mix of attractions, from a museum dedicated to Laurel & Hardy (this was, after all, Stan’s birthplace) to an old priory that is now home to a Buddhist centre and Europe’s largest Buddha.
All around the bay there’s wonderful food to be had, from scrumptious pub grub to sophisticated dining, but nowhere better than in the handsome village of Cartmel, which has earned itself a national reputation for culinary excellence thanks in large part to superstar chef Simon Rogan, whose two restaurants in the village have three Michelin stars between them. And that’s not forgetting the world-famous sticky toffee pudding, proudly sold in the village shop.
Whatever time of year you visit, there’s always something on. The spring fair at historic Holker Hall is one of the area’s most popular events, as is their winter market. Summer is racing season in Cartmel, whose beautiful track has been hosting national hunt events since 1856 with a wonderful fun fair; it’s also when the town hosts a major agricultural show. Christmas is a time to celebrate Charles Dickens in Ulverston, with hundreds of stalls and folks in 19th-century costume: don’t be surprised if you’re greeted by Mr Bumble or Miss Havisham.
